Carretera Transpininsular (Federal Highway 1) .
This road snakes down through 1,000+ miles of rugged desert. It is paved today, but in 1969 it was a difficult sand and gravel track going south from Ensenada, with no bridges over the canyons or culverts over the dry stream beds - and no facilities, including gas stations, for the rare traveler passing through. The Baja Challenge!
